On April 16, 2025, the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies (hereafter referred to as "the Institute") hosted a talk featuring Dr. Christina J. Y Lai (賴潤瑤), Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Academia Sinica. Dr. Lai delivered a talk titled “Finding the Trade-Security Nexus: Taiwan's Economic Statecraft from 2009 to 2021”, with the Chinese subtitle 「臺灣貿易政策與國家安全:國際關係中安全化理論的啟示」.
The talk explored the application of securitization theory within international relations, using Taiwan's trade policy between 2009 and 2021 as a case study. Dr. Lai provided insights into how economic strategies can be linked to national security concerns, shedding light on Taiwan's evolving approach to economic statecraft amid shifting global dynamics.
The event was moderated by Dr. Nien-chung Chang-Liao (張廖年仲), Associate Professor (Adjunct) at the Institute and Associate Research Fellow at Academia Sinica's Institute of Political Science. In addition to students from the Institute, more than a dozen participants from other departments and institutions attended the event.
